Finca Emprendedora is a financial education program for smallholder coffee farmers intended to democratize information regarding how the coffee trade works and to give them the tools to understand their farm as the small business that it is and empower them to make appropriate decisions based on their personal and family goals.
Getting the supply chain to pay "fair" prices to farmers is only one side of the equation. Equally important is the farm's cost structure, different income streams, and strategies to maintain economic resilience and a stable standard of living. For decades, farmers have been influenced by coffee buyers and equipment and input salespeople to plant nothing but coffee and to increase production at any cost. This has led to a loss of biodiversity and food security, as well as a higher per-unit cost of production. Higher production and narrower margins are favorable when prices are high, but leaves the farm in a more vulnerable, dependent state when prices drop.
